I’ve met a few people that fall into one side or the other in the Star Wars vs. Star Trek debate. I happen to be in the group of people that enjoys both Star Wars AND Star Trek. I’m also glad to see J.J. Abrams at the helm of both franchises. It doesn’t bother me a bit.
What does bother me, though is this constant urge to be in the us vs. them dichotomy. It’s a false dichotomy and it’s destructive, socially, to all of us. There’s room in this world for Chevy AND Ford, Coke AND Pepsi, Android AND iOS and, heaven forbid, Star Trek AND Star Wars.
When we start thinking in terms of AND instead of OR, we start seeing possibilities that we missed before. We can have science fiction AND fantasy in one story. Or, we can have, science fiction, fantasy, romance, mystery, thriller, horror, vampires, werewolves AND literary fiction together in one story in an urban, ancient, future setting (theoretically; did I miss any?).
In what ways can you explore using AND instead of OR to expand your horizons?
